Lobenberg: Das Porto Santo Archipel soll 14 Millionen Jahre alt sein. Und hier soll mal das Zentrum des Weinbaus gewesen sein. Heute gibts nur noch 14 Hektar, genannt Limestone crust, ganz im Norden. Uralte Reben in kleinen Kratern ganz in Meernähe. Schräger und skuriler ist Weinbau kaum vorstellbar. Gemischter Satz mit diesem und jenem....tssss...Bis zu 80 Jahre alte Reben auf Lehm und Sand und Kalkstein. In doppeltem Lesevorgang eingesammelt, je nach Reife. Direktpressung der ganzen Trauben. Spontan im Stahl vergoren und im Burgunder-Barrique ausgebaut. Blasses Gelb. Quitte, unreife grüne Mandarine, Zitronengras, Steinobst und Meerwasser in der Nase. Grüne Walnuss dazu mit Chillinoten, Schärfe ausstrahlend. Krachender Mund mit Chilli und Zitrusfrucht, Salbei und Salz, viel Salz. Vollmundig, fast brachial aber ganz holzfrei, nur einfach überwältigend in seiner Intensität. Salbei-Honig-Bonbons im Nachhall mit sahniger Quitte und salzig-steiniger Wucht. Was für ein Hammer ohne jedes Fett, aber Säure und Salz sind perfekt eingepasst in einen cremig-fruchtigen Rahmen. Der Wein kann mit jedem Grand Cru aus dem Burgund mithalten. Dieser Portugiese kann sich messen mit Palacios O-Soro und Frontonios El Jardin de las Iguales Blanco. Das ist einer der ganz ganz großen Weißweine der Welt. Irre. 100+/100

Suckling über: Crosta Calcaria dos Profetas

-- Suckling: This has lovely aromatics, with pleasant notes of lemon zest, flint and a slight oxidative note of bruised apples and crusted salt. The palate is medium- to full- bodied and sharp, with a sense of enveloping salinity. A very persistent, focused and precise finish where the salinity and a touch of white fruit converge. This comes from 40- to 80-year-old vineyards planted on calcareous soils in the northern part of the island of Porto Santo in Madeira. Aged for 11 months in two 228-liter used barrels. 83% listrao and 17% caracol. Drinkable now, but I would love to see how it ages.

Parker über: Crosta Calcaria dos Profetas

-- Parker: There is a fifth white, the 2023 Crosta Calcária dos Profetas Vinho do P. Santo, produced with a field blend of the two white varieties found in the north of the island in a zone know as 'Crosta Calcária' because it has limestone crusts. It's 83% Listrão and 17% Caracol from 80+-year-old vines. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in small stainless steel vats and neutral 228-liter oak barrels for 11 months. It has a bright yellow color and a characterful nose with some flinty reductive notes, hints of spices, dried herbs and flowers and a very tasty palate, velvety and fresh, balanced with almost citrus acidity and salty minerality that give it a very long and tasty finish. It's textured, supple and complex, really intense and different from the others. It has 12.2% alcohol, a pH of 3.22 and 6.83 grams of acidity. I think this is superb now, but it should also develop nicely in bottle. Only 933 bottles were produced. It was bottled in August 2024.
