Lobenberg: Wahrscheinlich ist der Cheval des Andes vor allen anderen »internationalen« Kooperationen in Südamerika eines der überhaupt besten Preis-Qualitäts-Verhältnisse in Südamerika. Cheval des Andes und Terrazas de los Andes gehören beide zum LVMH Konzern, und so darf Pierre Olivier Clouet, der Weinmacher und Geschäftsführer von Cheval Blanc zusammen mit Winzer Gérald Gabillet zeigen was in diesem »Grand Cru Argentiniens« steckt. Die Kombination aus dem fordernden Klima der Höhenlagen Mendozas zusammen mit top Rebmaterial – vor allem altem, wurzelechtem Malbec – bewirkt hier Wunder. Dunkles Violett im Glas. Auf die dichten, intensive Blaubeeren und schwarzkirschen legen sich ebenso dichte, verführerische Veilchen- und Blüten-Aromen, Leder, brauner Tabak und ein Hauch Kaffee. Im Mund findet ein fantastisches Spiel aus Spannung und Dichte statt. Die reife Frucht wird perfekt mit der grandiosen Frische balanciert. Hibiskus und ein Hauch Minze. Im Nachhall klingt Pfefferwürze und die graphit-artige Mineralität lange nach. Das ist ein Wein voller Finesse und Balance und dabei kracht er noch so richtig im Mund. Jahr um Jahr ist der Cheval des Andes verlässlich ein großer Wein für seinen erstaunlich niedrigen Preis! 98-100/100

-- Parker: The 2020 Cheval des Andes was harvested from the last of February for the first time ever. It was Gabillet's second vintage at Cheval des Andes, and that year, he had to start without waiting for Pierre Olivier Clouet and Pierre Lurton from Cheval Blanc; when they arrived, they had finished picking the Malbec, which surprisingly was fresher in Las Compuertas (because of the higher percentage of clay?) than in Altamira (where the vines suffered more stress), saving the freshness. They now harvest using cold trucks (for the first time), and they also started earlier in the morning (six in the morning, impossible earlier in Mendoza...), which he reckons was very good for the precision of the wine. They used 40% 225-liter barrels, 40% 400-liter oak barrels and 20% 2,500-liter foudres, half of them new and with an élevage of 15 months on average, depending on the lots and varieties from 12 to 18 months. The final blend was 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, which makes a comeback as it was not used since 2016. The key was to finish the fermentation of the Petit Verdot without skins, and that way, they have been able to use it in the blends of 2021, 2022 and 2023 in small but increasing percentages. This is slightly riper than 2019, with a little more alcohol (14.5%) and with very good structural tannins but saving the freshness, and it has the spicy side from the Petit Verdot (Gabillet talks about white pepper). The wine has the ultra sleek and polished texture and the elegance and the balance that is the signature here; the wine is very clean and precise. I see very good regularity across the three vintages I tasted next to each other—this 2020 and the 2018 and 2019. Overall, this is a triumph over the adverse conditions of the vintage. They produced their usual 100,000 bottles (since 2018), as they are renewing their vineyards and want to keep the volume stable. They produce this volume from the 36 productive hectares they have in Las Compuertas and Altamira. 98/100

-- Tim Atkin: Picked and transported in refrigerated trucks to combat the heat of the 2020 vintage, the latest release of Cheval des Andes is all about attention to detail. Pairing equal amounts of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon and - for the first time since 2016 - 2% Petit Verdot, it’s a brilliant assemblage, combining components from Las Compuertas and Paraje Altamira. Mocha and coffee bean aromas segue into a refined, nuanced, layered palate with graceful tannins, blackberry, bramble and blackcurrant leaf flavours and supporting acidity.A triumph, despite the challenging growing season. 2025-35 98/100

-- Colin Hay: I find this very much back on form in this vintage, with more refined and polished tannins. Incense and cordite. Crushed petals. Black tea leaf. Pure, lifted and aerial aromatically. Crystalline, limpid and very precise on the palate. Sleek but really intense and concentrated too. This is perhaps the best recent vintage of Cheval des Andes. Tight. Gracious. Cool. And very impressive. 98/100

-- Weinwisser: Der Cheval des Andes ist eine Kooperation von Château Cheval Blanc und Terrazas de los Andes. Die Reben erstrecken sich über 47 Hektar, der 2020er Cheval des Andes besteht aus 49 % Malbec, 49 % Cabernet Sauvignon und 2 % Petit Verdot mit 14.5 Vol.-%. Dunkle, viskose Farbe. Tiefgründig und duftig braucht der Cheval des Andes 2020 ein wenig Zeit, um sich im Geruch auszubreiten, dann öffnet er sich sehr aromatisch, mit ätherischer Würze und süßlich-schokoladiger Fülle. Dabei besitzt er immer die typische Distinktion eines Cheval Blanc und ist nie zu offensiv. Dicht und klar auf der Zunge, mit großartiger Tiefenstaffelung und ausgezeichneter Struktur, lässt er einen mit seiner generösen Fülle einfach nicht mehr los. Er ist immer transparent und feinwürzig, endlos lang, er hält fest und schiebt zugleich am Gaumen. Ein grandioser, begeisternder Cheval des Andes. 19,5/20

-- Suckling: Ripe, baked dark cherries with spices and some violets. Hints of graphite, cocoa powder, incense and black pepper. Dried rose petals. A slightly fuller Cheval des Andes with tense, silky tannins and a lingering, generous finish. Ripe, but still has lots of restraint and precision. 49% malbec, 49% cabernet sauvignon with a 2% petit verdot. 24% of the malbec comes from Altamira and all the rest of the fruit come from Las Compuertas. Drink or hold. 97/100
