Heiner Lobenberg über:
Rioja CVNE Monopole Clasico Reserva 2020

Lobenberg: Fast reinsortig Macabeo oder Viura vom reinen Kalkstein in 600 Metern Höhe. Ostexposition. Drahtrahmen gegen Wind.

-- Suckling: Honeysuckle, honey, pears and flint as well as almond paste. Medium body. Tight and focused with a richness, but not heavy. Nutty and honey flavors with just a hint of salted nuts. Viura. Aged eight months with some barrels under flor, like in fino Sherry. Drink now.

Tim Atkin über: Rioja CVNE Monopole Clasico Reserva

-- Tim Atkin: CVNE's superb white - now sold as a Reserva rather than a Genérico - is a blend of Viura from the bodega's La Plana vineyard and 5% Palomino, aged in a combination of oak barrels and Sherry casks. Salty, bright and refined, it has notes of blanched almond and citrus peel and a toasty undertone.

Parker über: Rioja CVNE Monopole Clasico Reserva

-- Parker: The white 2020 Monopole Clásico Reserva (which now includes 'Reserva' in the name, which it was before but it wasn't explicit on the label) replicates the wines from the 1960s, letting the juice settle in concrete and fermenting it in stainless steel, then matured in oak barrels and Sherry butts, where it matured for eight months. They are reducing the amount of Manzanilla they add to the wine, as they have managed to grow a veil of flor yeasts in the butts filled with Viura wine. The Sherry twang is even subtler than in the past. The wine has 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.34, 5.31 grams of acidity and a mellower mouthfeel than in previous years, but those Sherry notes grow with time in bottle. It's a lighter year (it shows the vintage), savory and different but subtler. 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2023.

Penin über: Rioja CVNE Monopole Clasico Reserva

-- Penin: Strohgelb. In der Nase trockene Kräuter, helle Früchte, würzig und geröstetes Brot. Im Mund reife Früchte, ausgewogen und geschmackvoll.

Weingut über: Rioja CVNE Monopole Clasico Reserva

-- Weingut: The grapes for this wine come from our own vineyards in Villalba de Rioja, just over five hectares planted 15 years ago, facing east and on limestone soils. The vines are trellised for their protection against the wind to which this vineyard is exposed. The altitude here is over 600 metres. Monopole Clásico is made from a blend of varieties, hand harvested at their optimum ripeness and picked into 20kg boxes. The grapes are pressed gently and, as in the 1960s, the must is transferred to concrete vats where it is allowed to settle. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats and once completed, the wine is racked, along with its fine lees, to used barrels and “botas” to complete its ageing. These are barrels and “botas” which have been used two or three times before and with capacities of 300, 400 and 500 litres. The wine remains in barrel for around 8 months including a period of biological ageing under a layer of “flor” yeast. This method of ageing contributes the peculiar organoleptic characteristics of Monopole Clásico, enriching the wine with aromas of chamomile and nuttiness, at the same time as augmenting the sensation of freshness from acidity and conferring a long finish. All of this enables us to produce a wine which demonstrates the attributes of the variety as well as the peculiarity of a wine from times gone by.
