Lobenberg: Das Porto Santo Archipel soll 14 Millionen Jahre alt sein. Und hier soll mal das Zentrum des Weinbaus gewesen sein. Heute gibts nur noch 14 Hektar, genannt Limestone crust, ganz im Norden. Uralte Reben in kleinen Kratern ganz in Meernähe. Schräger und skuriler ist Weinbau kaum vorstellbar. Gemischter Satz mit diesem und jenem....tssss...Bis zu 80 Jahre alte Reben auf Lehm und Sand und Kalkstein. In doppeltem Lesevorgang eingesammelt, je nach Reife. Direktpressung der ganzen Trauben. Spontan im Stahl vergoren und im Burgunder-Barrique ausgebaut. Blasses Gelb. Quitte, unreife grüne Mandarine, Zitronengras, Steinobst und Meerwasser in der Nase. Grüne Walnuss dazu mit Chillinoten, Schärfe ausstrahlend. Krachender Mund mit Chilli und Zitrusfrucht, Salbei und Salz, viel Salz. Vollmundig, fast brachial aber ganz holzfrei, nur einfach überwältigend in seiner Intensität. Salbei-Honig-Bonbons im Nachhall mit sahniger Quitte und salzig-steiniger Wucht. Was für ein Hammer ohne jedes Fett, aber Säure und Salz sind perfekt eingepasst in einen cremig-fruchtigen Rahmen. Der Wein kann mit jedem Grand Cru aus dem Burgund mithalten. Dieser Portugiese kann sich messen mit Palacios O-Soro und Frontonios El Jardin de las Iguales Blanco. Das ist einer der ganz ganz großen Weißweine der Welt. Irre. 100+/100

-- Weingut: The island of Porto Santo emerged 14 million years ago in the Atlantic Ocean, being geolo- gically one of the oldest islands in the Portu- guese archipelagos. It was also the first to be discovered by Zarco in 1418. The ancients say it was here that the rippest grapes were harvested for the wine that made these islands famous. Today there are less than 14 hectars left, farmed by a group of resistants. In the neighbour island the people of Porto Santo are known as “Prophets”, an ancient nickname that has never made more sense when you see these old vineyards planted by the sea, close to the ground, protected from the ocean and the wind by “crochet” rock walls or by ingenious cane structures. “Limestone crust” is a geological zone in the north of the Island of Porto Santo, where the limestone profile becomes compacted, providing the wines with an additional minerality, transporting us to seashells and another dimension of wine. Traditional low trellis vines, close to the ground, protected from strong winds by reeds or crochet walls. Age of the vineyards is 40 to 80 years old. Clay-sandy limestone with a pH>8.5. The grapes were hand-harvested and vinified for the first time on the island of Porto Santo. Strict selection in the vineyard, with some vineyards harvested more than once, picking the ripest grapes first and the remaining ones in a second harvest. Whole bunches were pressed directly into settling tanks, separating three fractions, without any use of SO2 until the end of fermentation, to allow for pre-oxi- dation of the must and a fuller spontaneous fermentation. The musts fermented on lees, in horizontal stainless steel tanks of 250L to 1000L, and barrels of 228L where they remained for a total ageing of 11 months. Pale yellow color and an intense nose with saline, mineral notes of gunpowder and iodine. On the palate, it has a full-bodied and textu- red attack, with the aromas repeating in the retronasal. It exhibits superb persistence.
